About

About Jeff Jones

About Me

Hello! My name is Jeff Jones and I live just outside of Nashville, Tennessee with my wife, Tresa and our little dog, Maggie. I have been feeding birds and wildlife in my back yard for over seventeen years! My goal has always been to get the most enjoyment for the least money and trouble.

I’m also a bit of a snob when it comes to my back yard visitors. Too many times I’ve heard people talking about their feeders being overrun with this or that nuisance bird. I can feel their pain. My very first feeder was a gigantic hopper feeder that I put out with sunflower seeds. Much to my dismay, it was quickly overtaken by a flock of grackles.

Then, after switching to safflower, it was the doves that wouldn’t let anybody else feed. I knew I had to keep at it to find what works.

Through constant experimentation, I finally found a way to encourage the birds I want while discouraging those I don’t. My back yard and life have never been the same.

How Can I Help You?

I have devised a system to address whatever birds you have in your back yard. I can help you find that mix of feeders, food and strategies to have all the critters you want happy and keeping away those you don’t. With a mix of tips, stories, reviews and other resources I can help you do just that. Basically, you get to benefit from my 17 plus years of trial and error. I also want to help you save money by getting only the supplies, food and gear that fits your budget.

This Blog Is About YOU. Will You Help Me Help You?

As much experience as I have, I still haven’t seen or know everything. If I don’t know the answer I’ll tell you. But I CAN find out for you! Simply leave me a comment after any post or use the contact form to suggest any topic you’d like to see covered in the future.  I really want to help you succeed with your bird feeding!

About The BirdOculars Name

My Little Titmouse FriendWhen I started this site in 2009, everybody was setting up what were called “thin affiliate sites.” They had a wealth of product reviews but very little human touch. Their plan was to dominate keywords, sell a ton of stuff and be gone within two years. They were “disposable” sites. After trying my hand at that and doing some fine binocular, book and gear reviews, I decided I really needed to do more for my readers than just review products.

After all, birding is one of my true passions and not just an income opportunity.

The change I wanted to make is to get closer to my readers and help them solve problems. Showing them there IS a REAL human behind this blog that cares about their success. The wealth of comments I’ve gotten since making that change tells me I made the right choice.

I spend way more time on sites where a human teaches me something. Who that person is makes a lot of difference to me. I’m sure the same is true for you. That is why I’ve tried to give you glimpses in all of my posts and reviews of who I am and what I stand for. I hope you appreciate this transparency.

My Goals Going Forward

My goals are broadly twofold.

  1. I want to give you the tips and resources to succeed with your birding. However you define it. I will continue to review products I think will be useful to you in this pursuit.
  2. I want to assist you in any way with problems or challenges you’re having in your back yard or elsewhere. As, I’ve said above, I don’t have all the answers but I CAN find them!

In the mean time, I’d be honored if you would browse my Bird Conservation, Bird Feeding or Product Reviews archives to get a better feel for who I am.

Finally, don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter here to stay informed of new posts and reviews and claim your free birding books NOW!

Above all, HAVE FUN!
