It Was Never About The Money
Over two years ago, I set out to build a blog where I could share and swap birding stories and information with people who had similar interests. I added a binoculars section to help pay the bills and to present products I thought my readers would be interested in. Unfortunately, I didn’t know what I was doing and the site started to take on a look of a store rather than a blog. I’ve learned a lot since I started the blog and I’m going to make some changes. Here are some of them.
Removing Store Pages From Navigation
I feel now like if you come to my site that you may see something of interest but that the navigation is heavily weighted towards selling and products. I’m going to remove the store categories from my main navigation. My feeling is if you find my site because of something I’ve written you can choose to go to the store from that article if you wish. However, I don’t want first time visitors to be inundated with brands and products when it comes to getting around.
Adding A Reviews Section
I still feel very strongly that binoculars are an excellent tool for casual and serious birders alike. For this reason, I will be reviewing the brands that are consistently getting high marks from users so you can make an informed decision if you’re in the market for binoculars.
Scaling Down To Minimum Product Offerings
Keeping in line with the reviews section, I’ll be scaling down the product offerings to only binoculars which I have reviewed. This will greatly reduce the navigation clutter as well. I understand that if somebody finds a page about a particular brand and model that they are most likely looking for information about that product. Not just a listing of products offered for sale.
Site Redesign
I will be changing to a new WordPress theme that should make navigation even easier to understand. I also hope you find it more visually pleasing.
I Need Your Help
While I am drawing up plans for the redesign, I welcome your comments and suggestions on things you’d like to see the new BirdOculars.com site have. Please email me at help @ birdoculars.com to send those ideas along.
Thank you for tolerating my poor site design and I look forward to hearing your feedback on the changes I will be making.
