How I Saved A Rabbit’s Life

By Jeff Leave a Comment

Being Mindful Has Its Merits

A couple months ago while I was preparing for a trip to NYC to help out a friend in his business, I was going about my usual business when something unusual happened that caused me to take notice.

I was taking my dog, Maggie, out for her evening pre-bedtime routine when I saw a little bunny on our patio. It immediately ran underneath the cover for our crawlspace and hid.  The wood covering it overhangs on the side they went under so I thought they were happy to be hiding there.  It didn’t make another move so I figured it would just go and rejoin the family after we had gone.

I was in a bit of a hurry the next morning trying to make the last minute preparations for my trip but I still had the presence of mind to think “Are you SURE it didn’t crawl into the crawl space entrance?”  The area under the cover is about 3 feet deep, solid brick with nothing but a locked door heading to the crawlspace.  Hopping down there would be a certain death sentence.

I raised the heavy wooden cover and sure enough, there was the little one looking scared as can be.  I very slowly reached down and picked it up, put it back on the lawn and watched it hop away.  You have no idea what a great feeling that was!

It Might Seem Little To Some

Too often in our world, blame is tossed around too easily.  I know tons of people that would cite the “survival of the fittest” model and claim other rabbits won’t do that because of them.  I don’t buy that.  We humans have imposed ourselves on animals’ survival and that effect can’t be ignored.  Saying the rabbit shouldn’t have done that is silly.  If we hadn’t built the house there, none of this would have happened in the first place.

I know the whole experience is very stressful for the animal. However, since it had not been hurt in any way and hopped away just fine after I put him down, I feel very strongly he’ll be fine.

Just a simple reminder to keep your eyes and hearts open while you are going about your daily routines.  You could end up saving a life yourself because of it.
