New Bird Feeders Are Great At This Time Of Year
Let’s face it. Winter is the time that wild birds need us the most. Naturally occurring food sources are all but gone and they need to find ways to replace them. Add to this their increased energy demands to keep them warm and you’ve got the makings of a rush on your existing bird feeding stations. Having overcrowded feeders also increases the risk of them spreading diseases and could keep youngsters from being able to eat at all.
That’s why this is the perfect time of year to consider adding additional bird feeders to your backyard stations.
What Kind Of Backyard Birds Can You Attract?
Having a mix of hopper feeders, tube feeders, platform feeders window feeders and suet feeders will only increase the popularity of your feeder stations by attracting a wider selection of birds to your feeders.
Just like humans, many species have their own favorite food. With so many more birds searching for food during the winter, you have a much better chance of attracting those backyard birds which you would normally not see.
Here’s a quick guide to help you decide.
- Woodpeckers love suet
- Chickadees and Titmice will eat almost anything from any feeder
- Finches prefer sunflower seed from a hopper, tube or platform feeder
- Cardinals love sunflower and safflower from a hopper, tube or platform feeder
- Wrens will eat suet when the mood strikes them
- Mourning Doves will eat safflower, thistle or sunflower from a hopper or platform feeder or scattered on the patio
- American Goldfinches will eat thistle or hulled sunflower seed from a tube or window feeder.
Don’t forget to include a source of water for them either.
