Walmart To Start Handling Pennington Seed

Heard It Through The Grapevine

I was in Walmart the other day and ran into John who worked in the garden center. I was looking for the Morning Song Squirrel and Critter Food and I was unable to find it. That’s when John saw me and asked me what I was looking for. When I told him he said most definitely that they will not be carrying that any more. He said that Pennington will be coming into their stores and be replacing most of their products with Pennington products. He said he also thought Pennington had a wildlife mix that would replace the Morning Song. I haven’t had a chance to verify this but John really seemed to care and be knowledgeable about his products.

If you remember, I wrote some time ago about how Pennington really dropped the ball by making a major media push for their bird seeds and then had almost none of them consistently available to us bird feeders. It was almost like spending money telling everybody you know that you’ll be releasing a great new product that will save them money and then just not following through. I’d completely given up on Pennington products before I spoke with John.

What I Recommend

I would go to or call your neighborhood Walmart and ask to speak with the garden center manager. They won’t know the exact timetable for each product but they should know when the representatives from Pennington will be in to order and stock their shelves. This is not a putdown of the manager but rather the way Walmart does stuff. Each store gets what Walmart sends them. Only in the case of new products or vendor changes will the staff be informed of when it will happen.

I’m excited to hear this because the Morning Song line is just OK and has recently gotten pricier than it should. For instance, corn cobs for squirrels were about five and a half dollars when I first started buying them. Last year, they had made it to six and a half and this year they are nearly eight bucks! Ridiculous! I’m hoping the Pennington products will bring a better selection of better quality feed for backyard birders that will save them money too.

I’m interested to see what happens. I’m also interested to know what you think or have heard about this. Please leave a comment below. Anything you clarify for us would be greatly appreciated.
