Paying Them Back
When you’re looking over your Christmas list or lists, are you remembering those that provide you with so much pleasure year round? I don’t know what I would do sometimes if I weren’t able to just take a break from my at home business to watch the little ones feed and fuss at each other. It makes my heart glad to know I’m helping them to grow and prosper but they help me as well in ways they’ll never understand.
That’s why I like to offer a special treat around the holidays.
Give Them A Surprise
We all get stuck in patterns. We’ve honed our feeding skills over many years so we know what each and every bird in our backyard prefers. So, we make sure to give it to them if at all possible.
Guess what? Many of our visitors may have favorites but still enjoy an unusual treat. One such case is peanut butter suet. That link is to a recipe on the Birdwatcher’s Digest site that is easy to make and everything from cardinals to bluebirds will devour it. Just make sure to put it close to your house to keep the scaredy-cat starlings at bay. I originally got this recipe from Julie Zickefoose, a nature writer and artist, among other things.
So, there you have it. This year I’ll be making a big batch of peanut butter suet so I can give them something they need at this time of year for many weeks to come.
What will you be doing for your backyard friends this year? Leave me a comment and let me know about it.
