Bluebirds Are Moving In!

By Jeff Leave a Comment

Contested Dwelling

This year I’ve had more than a couple species look at one of my two bluebird boxes. I had the bluebirds, chickadees, titmice, starlings and cowbirds. If you’ve been following this blog for any time at all you’d know I’d never let starlings or sparrows move in so their fate was predetermined. I also realize the cowbirds were just looking for an egg drop because they don’t build nests. They just leave their eggs to be raised by the unfortunate bird whose nest they’ve selected. I’ve also never had a titmouse take a nestbox.

So, it came down to the chickadees and the bluebirds and it was an interesting few weeks. The bluebirds came by first, looked around more like window shoppers and were not to be seen again for weeks. I don’t know if either of these birds are my original bluebird pair just checking on their nest but they didn’t look very impressed or interested. One week for about four straight days I had chickadees come by and pop in and out of the box repeatedly. So much so that I was sure they had started building. Not to be. Then, this week the bluebirds came back in earnest and spent a good deal of time kicking the tires and checking the view from outside and inside of the box.

Bluebirds Sign The Papers

Finally, four days ago I saw the female start putting nesting material in the box. She put material into the box up until today. The pictures below were taken at the end of two days. This is the first time I actually thought she was going to cover up the entrance hole! She put so much stuff in their it reminded me of a chickadee box. Normally, the bluebirds put a good base down but rarely build anywhere near the level of the opening. I’m going to go out again today and see how high she’s built it to.

I’ll Keep You Posted

I just wanted to update you on what’s happening in my backyard this nesting season. I’ll be reporting back on the progress they’re making with new photos. Stay tuned and let me hear from you on what’s going on with your backyard friends this year.

Also, don’t forget if you need some nest boxes, I recommend Duncraft brand nest boxes.
